Safety sensors are attached to the rails on which garage doors roll up and down.
Their job is to reverse the direction in which a garage door is travelling if they detect an obstruction. This can prove vital when that obstruction is for example a small child or family pet.
You can test this out, though we recommend using a broom instead of a child!
